What are Cat Whiskers For?

So what are cat whiskers and what are they used for? Cat whiskers are the overgrown rather thick hairs growing prominently especially on either sides of a cat's nose and upper facial lip.

"Cat whiskers are also known as vibrissae or tactile hair. Unlike the fur, whiskers go so deep into the body of the cat that they are directly connected to the sensitive muscles and nervous system."

WHY DO CATS HAVE WHISKERS?
here are a few reason for cats having whiskers:
*For gauging the size of an opening: cats use whiskers to measure the size of an opening just to see if they'll fit through since the cat's whiskers are about the same length as how wide the car is itself.
*For navigation: cat whiskers are so sensitive they can feel the slightest change in the direction of the breeze. they use this ability to creep through the junkiest places at night without bumping into anything.
*For helping position a prey: cat whiskers help in positioning a prey in their grasp since cats are long sighted, they can't see close objects. So when the prey is sighted from a distance, cats use the whiskers on their front legs to position the prey properly for the killing strike.
*for mood indication: whiskers can again be used to tell how a cat feels, here are the major examples
i.when afraid: a cat's whiskers are alined to its body
ii.when enraged: the whiskers are nearly pointing directly forward

WHAT HAPPENS IF A CAT'S WHISKERS ARE CUT OFF OR DAMAGED?
if you have been following this article, then its easy enough to say if a cat's whiskers are cut off or trimmed, it would mean depriving it of the above stated uses of cat whiskers. NEVER CUT YOUR CAT'S WHISKERS.

  1. Very interesting information. Some of it I knew -- some of it I didn't. The most important things I didn't know. Makes me wonder about dogs' whiskers and men's whiskers?? Thanks.....
